Thought Behind Every Art Class

Recently, a parent commented that the art I teach feels like it's just "throwing something together without a thought." I want to take a moment to lovingly but firmly disagree.

As Salvador Dalí once said, “Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing. At Whimsy Art Club, we don’t just dive into a craft—we first dive into context. Whether we’re exploring ancient civilizations, groundbreaking artists, or cultural traditions from across the globe, each class begins with a visual journey. The slides we explore together are filled with new facts and stunning images that spark curiosity—ones many of the kids have never encountered before.

Does this understanding always show in the art they create immediately? Not always. Sometimes it shows in subtle ways, and sometimes it blooms later—days or even weeks after class—when they see something that connects back. But I see it. They’re paying attention. They’re absorbing, processing, and creating in ways that are far more than “just doing.”

In 2017, I left a steady 9-to-5 job and traveled to 23 countries across 5 continents. From ancient cities carved into cliffs to futuristic hubs rising from the desert, every moment—big or small—shaped who I am and the work I now do. These experiences taught me how much beauty, meaning, and connection there is in the world—and that’s what I bring into each class I design.

So no, it’s not just throwing things together. In fact, to assume that’s what your child is doing is to underestimate their thoughtfulness. When I ask them about their art, they always have something to say. A reason for a color choice. A story behind a shape. And when they don’t yet have a reason, I help them find one by simply asking, “Can you tell me a story about it?”

That’s why I love this work. It’s not about an instant result. It’s about planting seeds of wonder, self-expression, and discovery that grow over time.

And no—that’s not bragging. It’s just love, intention, and a deep belief in what art can do.
